Kathmandu: Martyrs’ Day is being observed across the country today (Magh 16) to honor the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy and civil freedom in Nepal. On this occasion, the government has declared a nationwide public holiday.

The day commemorates the supreme sacrifice of four renowned martyrs—Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmabhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha—who were executed in 1997 BS for raising their voices against the autocratic Rana regime. Today marks the final day of Martyrs’ Week, which began on Magh 10.

In Kathmandu, a morning procession was organized from Shanti Vatika to the Martyrs’ Memorial at Lainchaur. Wreaths were laid at the statues of the martyrs at various locations, with participants pledging to fulfill the dreams for which they laid down their lives.

Formal programs are also being held in government offices, educational institutions and various organizations across the country. Speakers highlighted that the establishment of democracy, republicanism and civil liberties in Nepal was made possible due to the sacrifices of the martyrs.
